Seattle Assault: 77-Year-Old BEATEN—Both Suspects FREE

Two suspects who brutally attacked a 77-year-old man in downtown Seattle remain free despite surveillance footage capturing the entire assault. One was arrested and released before charges were filed, while the second has yet to be apprehended.

Violent Attack Caught on Camera

Surveillance video from Seattle’s Real Time Crime Center shows the April 19 assault at the corner of Pike Street. Two young men approached the elderly victim, shoved him to the ground, and punched him repeatedly before walking away. The victim remained on the ground, unable to stand, while bystanders ignored his plight. Police later found the suspects at a nearby McDonald’s and arrested 29-year-old Ahmed Abdullahi Osman of Bellevue, Washington. The second suspect fled and remains at large.

Severe Injuries and Lengthy Hospitalization

The victim spent more than a week hospitalized with a broken arm, broken knee, and facial injuries. He told investigators he had just stepped off a bus when the unprovoked attack occurred. Osman faces second-degree assault charges, with prosecutors requesting $200,000 bail. Despite the severity of the injuries and video evidence, Osman was released from custody before his bail hearing while police continued their investigation. An arrest warrant was not issued until April 30, eleven days after the assault.

Criminal Justice System Under Fire

The case highlights growing concerns about Seattle’s criminal justice policies under Mayor Katie Wilson. According to reports, Osman shouted a message to the mayor after his arrest, suggesting familiarity with the city’s lenient prosecution practices. Both suspects now walk Seattle’s streets freely despite clear evidence of a violent assault on a vulnerable senior citizen. The second suspect’s identity has not been released, and authorities continue searching for him while Osman remains free pending his eventual court appearance.

Pattern of Catch-and-Release Policies

This incident represents a broader pattern in Seattle’s approach to violent crime. Despite surveillance technology designed to enhance public safety, the Real Time Crime Center footage has proven insufficient to keep dangerous individuals off the streets. The elderly victim’s prolonged hospitalization and serious injuries stand in stark contrast to the minimal consequences faced by his attackers. Community advocates question whether current policies adequately protect vulnerable residents from random violence in downtown areas.
