Horrifying Congo Slaughter — World Looks Away

Islamic State-linked militants are slaughtering Christians inside churches across eastern Congo — and the world is barely paying attention.

Massacre Inside a Church

On the nights of July 26 and 27, 2025, ADF militants descended on Komanda in Ituri province and killed more than 40 people gathered at a church, including several children, using guns and machetes. Human Rights Watch documented the attack, recording the names of 39 people killed, 9 injured, and 9 children abducted. The Islamic State claimed responsibility on its Telegram channel, stating 45 people were killed in the assault.

This was not an isolated incident. In February 2025, ADF militants carried out what is now known as the Kasanga massacre, with civil society sources reporting more than 70 bodies discovered inside a Protestant church. Aid to the Church in Need confirmed the killing of 70 civilians in that attack. The United Nations peacekeeping mission initially described early reports as “unverified” before the broader scope of the atrocity became undeniable.

A Pattern of Civilian Slaughter

The United Nations has documented a sustained pattern of ADF brutality across eastern Congo. In November 2025, the UN condemned attacks in which ADF fighters slaughtered 89 civilians across multiple localities in coordinated raids, burning homes and abducting residents. Among those killed were 17 civilians — including women in labor and patients receiving care — murdered inside a Catholic Church-run health center. The UN called the attacks “truly horrific.”

Amnesty International issued a damning December 2025 report describing war crimes across eastern Congo, warning that the conflict has been “overlooked” by the international community. Amnesty confirmed that the ADF abducts and kills civilians with alarming frequency and has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State since 2019. The group has targeted civilians since the early 2000s, but the pace and religious character of the attacks have intensified.

Islamic State Branding and a Chaotic Battlefield

Eastern Congo’s conflict involves multiple armed factions — including M23 rebels backed by Rwanda, Congolese government forces, and various militias — making attribution complex. The Council on Foreign Relations’ Global Conflict Tracker describes the region as a multi-actor war zone where ADF violence is increasing but overlaps with broader instability. This complexity has allowed the world to look away, treating the ADF’s Christian-targeting attacks as part of generic regional chaos rather than a religiously motivated campaign.

What is not in dispute is the scale of suffering. The Democratic Republic of the Congo has endured one of the deadliest conflicts since World War II, with over 6 million lives lost across decades of violence. The ADF’s Islamic State affiliation adds a chilling ideological dimension to attacks that consistently strike churches, church-run hospitals, and Christian gatherings. When ISIS publicly claims credit for killing worshippers by name, the religious targeting is not ambiguous — it is a declared objective. The question is whether Western governments and media will treat it as such, or continue to let these massacres fade into the background noise of a forgotten war.
